Alpine and Microsoft will expand their STEM education programme this season with events at multiple Formula 1 grands prix, and online content to encourage young women to pursue motorsport careers.

The Enstone-based F1 team and its major partner Microsoft – which also provides cloud services to the team – began their STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics) programme at last year’s Mexico City Grand Prix. In Mexico, they collaborated to encourage and train girls to build robotic cars in a two-day STEM clinic with the help of Dalia Ramos Guerra, head of build and test at Alpine.

Alpine aims to increase the number of women working for its team from 13% to 30% as part of its Rac(H)er programme – which will be bolstered by its new global initiative launched with Microsoft.

Race into STEM

Featuring a curriculum created in partnership with FIA Girls on Track, Race into STEM is a global programme that aims to create a pathway for young women and girls who want a career in STEM fields, including motorsport.

This initiative will include events at local schools during race events across the 2024 F1 season, and an online programme that includes a motorsport-based curriculum, spanning aerodynamics, composites, inspection and quality assurance and finance.

Furthermore, Race into STEM’s website will host competitions and video content including interviews from Alpine F1 team members to give young women guidance on how to develop skills needed to work in F1.

Microsoft’s director of sports partnerships, Monica Robbins, said: “We want to show girls that they can be anything they want to be, whether it's a driver, engineer, mechanic, designer, strategist or leader.

“Race into STEM will give girls a glimpse into the fascinating and fast-paced world of F1, where STEM skills are essential for success. We hope that by sparking their curiosity and confidence, we can inspire them to pursue their dreams and ambitions in STEM fields.”

Other F1 teams have launched their own STEM programmes including Mercedes, which has partnered with educational institutions in the UK as well as Lewis Hamilton’s Mission 44 charity, and Aston Martin, which has promoted STEM careers around the world as part of its ‘Make A Mark’ initiative.
