Bortoleto, who is a McLaren junior driver and F2 rookie, won the feature race at Monza from last on the grid.
A fortunate pit window opened when the safety car was deployed, which allowed Bortoleto to jump from the back to the very front. With that, he closed into the lead of the F2 drivers' title.
His rival Hadjar, who leads the championship chase heading into Azerbaijan, failed to pick up a point in Italy - while Bortoleto's haul of 25.5 points moved him 10.5 points behind the Red Bull junior.
Bortoleto picked up half a point in the sprint race having finished a joint eighth - to the nearest thousandth of a second - with Dennis Hauger. This meant the final point was split between the pair.
Paul Aron also left Monza without a point, which means Zane Maloney is third in the standings after the Italian round.
Prema's F1-bound driver Oliver Bearman took the sprint race victory and netted 16 points over the weekend, but he is still only 14th in the standings.
Meanwhile his Prema team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who at Monza was confirmed as Mercedes' 2025 Formula 1 driver alongside George Russell, took 12 points and sits sixth in the F2 championship.
