STEM On Track gives students the chance to build and drive their own racing kart using STEM concepts and compete in national finals against other schools across the UK.

Currently, more than 600 students from 45 schools are taking part in STEM On Track.

The programme has a particular focus on engaging students from underserved communities to ensure they get more equal opportunities in STEM education.

According to STEM On Track, 25% of participating students in 2025 are from Alternative Provision or Special Education Needs schools. Alpine F1 Team has engaged with the programme to expand it to more students.

Adam Sirett, STEM On Track co-founder, said: “For students who once struggled with maths, suddenly calculating ratios through the gears and learning about energy transfer through karting is a gamechanger.

“STEM should be exciting, messy and full of discovery, just like motorsport. With support from Alpine F1 Team we can bring this experience to even more students.”

The partnership has been launched as part of the 2025 British Science Week on March 7-16, 2025.

Participating schools have been invited to design a racing kart livery inspired by adaptation and innovation in motorsport and STEM with the competition judged by Alpine F1 Team and STEM On Track members. The winning school will receive a fully-funded place in the initiative including a racing kart kit for the team to build, brand and race.

The winning design will be unveiled at the STEM On Track National Finals on June 14, 2025.

Alpine F1 Team team principal Oliver Oakes added: “The goal of the initiative aligns with our team’s own D&I [diversity and inclusion] strategy in utilising outreach as a lever for change with support for programmes such as STEM on Track from partners such as Alpine F1 Team providing opportunities for learning that may otherwise be limited.”

The STEM On Track racing kart costs £3,150 and the price for the courses is £2,950. However, STEM On Track says that the kart is easily dismantled and reusable year on year, while help is provided in securing sponsorship to offset the cost of the initiative for schools.

Schools in the UK can enquire about applying to STEM On Track here.
